What's a content management system (CMS)?

A content management system is software that keeps track of every piece of content on your Web site, much like your local public library keeps track of books and stores them. Content can be simple text, photos, music, video, documents, or just about anything you can think of. A major advantage of using a CMS is that it requires almost no technical skill or knowledge to manage. Since the CMS manages all your content, you don't have to.

Here are a few basics of what the CMS will do for you:

WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) Editor
This editor allows you to take control of your web site. It allows anyone that has been given permission to edit and add content to all of your pages as well as insert links, images, audio, video, and most common document formats. If you can use a program like Microsoft Word you can use this editor, and don't worry, we'll be training you as well!

News Articles on your main page
If you have a lot of news to get out to your visitors, the CMS will allow you to create stand alone news pages that provide your visitors with a headline, a brief blurb, and a link to 'read more' right on your main page. Visitors can then read the headlines easily and efficiently and click the 'read more' link to be taken directly to the article they are interested in reading. RSS Feeds
Not only can your News be instantly displayed on other web sites, you can also display news from other web sites on yours! All with the click of a couple of buttons, visitors can display your News headlines on their site, when their site visitors click, they are taken directly to your site. Search & Site Map functionality
If you need to provide visitors with search capabilities or an easy to read site map of your content, the CMS can be set up to include these functions built directly into your design!

Breadcrumbs
Breadcrumbs are a navigation aid commonly used to help visitors to navigate and keep track of where they are within your site. This function is a part of the CMS system, so once it's applied to your web site, it will appear on all of your internal pages automatically.

Email and Print Icons
Another automatic function of the CMS is allowing visitors to email the page they are on to family and friends or create a printable page. These icons will appear on all of your content pages automatically.

Email Cloaking
It automatically adds a layer of security to email addresses that are placed within your pages. This function effectively hides all of your email addresses from spammers who troll web sites with software looking for email addresses to exploit. This is also done automatically when you input an email address into your pages.

Contact Us Form
Your 'Contact Us' page will automatically include all of your contact information plus an email form that allows people to send you their name, email address and a message.

Password Protected Pages
Need to show a few pages to just a select group of people or have a basic Members Only area for your site? The CMS can be set up to have Password Protected pages which will require individuals of your choosing to have a Username and Password before they are able to view it.
